The deceased were identified as Kalaikannan (70) and his son, Venkatesan (40). On Friday night, their neighbours at Venkatarathinam in Adyar alerted the police that a foul smell was emanating from the house.

Police went to the spot, broke open the door and found Venkatesan lying dead on the bed while Kalaikannan was lying in an unconscious state on the floor. After first aid was given, Kalaikannan reportedly told the police that his son had been asleep for the last three days.

Kalaikannan was rushed to Government Royapettah Hospital where he died on Saturday morning. Both their bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.

Investigation revealed that Kalaikannan retired from Indian Postal Service and his wife died 15 years ago. Since then, Kalaikannan reportedly avoided speaking to his neighbours and lived with Venkatesan, who was mentally unstable. While he did not step out of his house for the last three days, neighbours grew suspicious after foul smell emanated from the house, said the police.

When contacted, the Adyar police said that they could not trace their relatives and added that viscera samples of both them have been sent to the forensic lab to find out whether they committed suicide by consuming poison. Further inquiry is on.
