Kasimedu, Triplicane and MRC Nagar to get desal plant
At a time when the metropolis is struggling to meet its drinking water demand, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has initiated action to set up small desalination plants at Kasimedu, Triplicane and MRC Nagar.

According to Metro water sources, a feasibility study would be conducted with the help of private consultants having experience in the subject. Each desalination plant would have a capacity of 10 MLD.
The new desalination plants would augment already existing desalination plants in Minjur and Nemmeli. The two existing desalination plants have a capacity of 100 MLD.
Meanwhile, Metrowater has already planned a 150 MLD desalination plant in Nemmeli and 400 MLD plant in Perur. The Metrowater has already acquired coastal regulation zone clearance.
“We have floated a tender inviting private firms to conduct pre-feasibility studies at Kasimedu, Triplicane and MRC Nagar to set up the desalination plants.
We do not need much space to set up the plants as these are smaller plants. We will use seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) technology. The potential bidder would prepare feasibility report apart from preparing a detailed project report (DPR),” an official said.
Even though the Metrowater is yet to prepare a DPR, the plan is to lay the pipelines in a way to connect the nearest water distribution station. From where the treated water would be supplied to the public. “This would cut the expenditure to lay new pipelines.”
Now, Metro water has cut down the water supply to 525 MLD from 830 MLD that was supplied before the shortage.
