“We still don’t know if he tried to kill himself or was accidently hit by the train. The investigation is not over yet,” a senior railway police officer said.
Both of them hail from Erode and reportedly knew each other for a long time. She is working in a co-operative society in Chennai while he was working in a private insurance company in Erode.
The incident happened last Friday at around 8 pm when the woman was waiting for an EMU on platform number 2 of Chetpet railway station. The woman, who sustained injuries on her neck and face, was rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital by the other passengers who were at the railway station at the timeof the incident.
Police said that the woman’s family did not approve of her relationship with Surendar and fixed her marriage with another man. When Surendar confronted her about it, she said she had decided to marry the man her parents had arranged. This seems to have angered Surendar who attacked her on Friday.
