The arrested officer was identified as Bhooma Devi, crime inspector attached to the Adambakkam police station. She was arrested based on a complaint from one S Kannan, who was struggling to get back his two-wheeler which was seized last week.

Bhooma Devi, who was the inspector in-charge of the Law & Order wing after the regular officer in charge of the wing went on leave for 10 days, had seized Kannan’s vehicle during a vehicle check. He was not carrying the relevant documents with him at the time of checking, which led to the seizure of the vehicle. He was asked to bring the original documents and claim the vehicle from the station later.

When he reached the station carrying all the documents as instructed, Bhooma Devi demanded Rs 3,000 to release the vehicle. Shocked by this, Kannan tried to negotiate and said he was ready to give Rs 500. But she insisted on Rs 3,000. She reportedly told him that the printer at the station was not working and hence she could not issue him a release order. Instead, he was asked to pay Rs 3,000 and take the bike.

Frustrated over this, Kannan approached the DVAC with a complaint against the inspector. Based on the complaint, the DVAC team set a trap for the inspector and caught her red-handed on Monday evening while she was receiving the bribe.

Police sources noted that Bhooma Devi was crime inspector in Sankar Nagar police station earlier and she was transferred to Adambakkam station four months ago. During her 10-day tenure as the inspector in-charge of Law & Order wing, she used to use sit in the room of the Law & Order officer, which is said to be against the norms.
