As per the tender floated by the civic body, the potential bidder would be paid based on the key performance indicators rather than the quantity of garbage collected in the zones.
The civic body has also floated retenders inviting firms to do conservancy works in extended zones such as Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur.
“Ramky was given seven-year contract and we have extended the contract for further six months due to the announcement of Lok Sabha elections. We have to appoint another firm before end of the six months,” a Chennai Corporation official said.
Currently, Teynampet, Adyar and Kodambakkam amount to over 2.5 tonnes of garbage collection every day, which is nearly 50 per cent of the total garbage collected in the whole city.
Meanwhile, the civic body is in a fix as it could not able to find suitable contractors for the eight extended zones even after floating retenders for the fourth time.
The official added that the workers under Ramky would be shifted to the new contractor and temporary conservancy workers would be sent to eight extended zones. “Of the 15 zones, conservancy works in 11 zones will be privatised. Permanent employees in other zones will be moved to other four zones in which the Corporation will continue to clear garbage,” the official said.
