    Man held for branding toddler son to force wife to get dowry

    The city police arrested a 30-year-old man near Guduvanchery, who branded his 18-month-old son to force his wife into bringing more dowry from her parents. He had also detained the woman in a room for the past few days, police said.

    The man, identified as Karthikeyan from Adanur near Guduvanchery was working as contract labour at a private firm in Maraimalai Nagar.


    He married Parameshwari (28) three years ago, but used to torture her seeking more money as dowry even now, police said.


    Recently, he had asked her to bring Rs 10,000 and five sovereigns to start his own business. As Parameshwari could not raise the money from her family, he locked her inside a room a few days ago, and refused to give her food or even water. Police said even the baby had burn marks on his body, which he suffered after Karthikeyan allegedly stubbed him with cigarettes.


    Finally, Parameshwari managed to escape from the house on Thursday and filed a complaint at Chengalpattu all-women police station. Police arrested him and sent the boy to Chengalpattu government hospital for treatment.


    Man held for demanding dowry from law student


    A 25-year-old man, who wooed a law college student on Facebook on the promise of marrying her and demanded dowry, has been arrested in Avadi. The victim, a 21-year-old girl from Ayappakkam, befriended the accused D Lawrence (25) of Kalaivanar Nagar in Athipattu on Facebook in 2016 after which they developed a relationship. Lawrence runs a computer service centre in the locality, said the police.


    In February, the girl begin to live with him in a rented house in Avadi after Lawrence’s family promised to get them married in three months. But, when she asked Lawrence’s parents about the marriage, they allegedly demanded dowry. When the girl expressed her inability, his family allegedly asked her to leave their son and even threatened to kill her. After she approached the police.
