Kancheepuram district police superintendent Santosh Hadimani transferred Mahabalipuram inspector Ravikumar to the police control room, while the sub inspector from the station was transferred to Armed Police.
For impartial investigation, the DIG has directed Tiruvallur ADSP Thillai Natarajan to conduct the inquiry.
With the transfers on Friday, the number of police officers facing the heat rose to five. After the death of the man, who blamed police officers of extorting money from him, the SP had earlier transferred the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Mahabalipuram, and also the inspectors of Tiruporur and Kelambakkam stations.
Sources said there could be more transfers, as details of bars that have been functioning illegally are emerging after Nellaiappan’s death triggered a big controversy in the district. According to them, there are 106 bars that are functioning in Kancheepuram.
Nellaiappan, a 38-year-old originally hailing from Tirunelveli, had come to the office of the Mahabalipuram DSP on Tuesday, where he levelled allegations against DSP Subburaj, Tiruporur inspector Kannan, and some local functionaries of the AIADMK of harassing him seeking a hefty bribe in cash and kind to allow him to operate the illegal bars.
At one point, he doused himself with kerosene and set himself on fire. He was rushed to the burns ward at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for treatment, but succumbed to his injuries.
