An 18-year-old college student who was riding pillion on a two-wheeler on the Murasoli Maran flyover in Perambur was thrown off the structure after the speeding rider lost his balance and rammed the vehicle into a median on Tuesday evening.

The incident, which took place at 5.30 pm during peak hour traffic, shocked other motorists and bystanders who witnessed the young girl fly off the 15-metre high flyover and land on the road below.

The deceased has been identified as S Priya (18) from Madhavaram Milk Colony, a second-year B-Com student at a private college in Perambur while the rider A Abdul Malik (19) from Madhavaram, who studies BA Economics at a private college in Royapettah, sustained grievous injuries.

According to the police, Priya and Malik were returning home from a mall in Royapettah when the mishap took place. They were not wearing helmets.

“As Malik sped on his bike over the Murasoli Maran flyover, he suddenly lost control and the vehicle hit a centre median. In the impact, Priya was thrown away and fell from a height of several metres,” an officer said. Other motorists and locals rushed both the victims to the Stanley Government Hospital where Priya was admitted to intensive care unit for treatment. “But she died within a few minutes,” the official said. Malik, who also sustained injuries in the accident, is currently undergoing treatment.

Tirumangalam traffic investigation police have registered a case and are inquiring into the incident. Further investigation is on.
