Inspector shunted out of city police
A controversial cop, who was facing allegation of palming off a portion of the gold that was recovered from staff of a jewellery shop who had stolen it, has been shunted out to the South Zone. The move came after four of his subordinates approached senior officers to lodge complaint against the inspector.
Chennai
The row was triggered after four constables from Mambalam station were moved to Vacancy Reserve. Aggrieved over this, the personnel – Vijayakarthi, Sivabalan, Manojkumar, and Sathishkumar – complained to seniors including Additional Commissioner (South) Mahesh Kumar Agarwal, stating that they were targeted for questioning inspector Sampath. Two days later, he has been directed to report to the South Zone IG.
According to sources, a special team he led had arrested five and seized 1.6 kg gold that was stolen from Prince Jewellery by its staff in small quantities. The team seized jewels and Rs 3.5 lakh in cash. However, instead of reporting the full recovery, the inspector tried to take a part of the jewels and cash for himself.
Inspector Sampath was already in the eye of a controversy after being transferred out of Chennai last year for his alleged connection in gutkha scam.
