In the second incident in two days, an 18-year-old boy committed suicide by jumping off the fifth floor of his college hostel on SRM University campus in Kattankulathur on Monday morning. On Sunday, a 23-year-old girl ended her life by leaping off the eighth floor of the hostel.

Though the college management and the police have confirmed that there is no connection between the two incidents, it has created a fear among the parents. Blaming the mobile phones for students getting spoilt, the college management said it would take a few steps for the welfare of the students, including disabling WiFi in the hostels.
The deceased was identified as Aneesh Choudhary, a teenager from Jharkhand. He was studying first-year Electronics and Communications Engineering and staying in the college hostel. Around 8.30 am on Monday, he jumped from the fifth floor of his hostel building. Soon, he was rushed to the hospital on campus, but was declared dead on arrival. On information, the Maraimalai Nagar police team arrived at the spot and sent the body for autopsy. Choudhary before jumping from the washroom reportedly scribbled on the table using a marker pen, “Junior bro, never give up when you are depressed. Trust me, I **** my first year and I am still in this game.” However, the police are yet to find out why he took the extreme step.
Just the day before, Anupriya pursuing biomedical engineering in the university died after jumping from the hostel building. The police found a two-page suicide note in her room in which she had said that she was unhappy that her parents are restricting her life and she could not even watch her favourite television programmes.
After the two incidents, the college management said that the Psychiatry Department in the medical college offers ample support to them in handling students. There are counsellors on campus, who provide support and guidance to the students. An online counselling system, operating 24/7, also reaches out to the students, it added.
A release from the college said the institute has always advised and helped parents to be in constant touch with their children and also with the teachers to have an update on their ward’s performance and help them to do to best of their ability.
