The deceased, Vinothkumar alias Vinayagam (55), a mason and Ezhumalai, an electrician of Tiruvalluvar Nagar in Orathi village near Madurantakam, wanted to consume liquor on Thursday but the Tasmac outlets were closed. So, they went to the nearby Munnakulam village and allegedly consumed a lot of spurious liquor bought from one Kuppan. The next day both of them fell ill and were rushed to the hospital.
While Vinothkumar was declared dead on arrival, Ezhumalai too died in the hospital without responding to treatments on Saturday. While their relatives buried the bodies without allowing autopsy to be performed, they have alleged that both Vinothkumar and Ezhumalai died after consuming the spurious liquor. Villagers claimed that sale of spurious liquor is rampant in the locality due to the absence of Tasmac outlets.
When contacted, the Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police Santosh Hadimani refuted the allegations and said that Vinothkumar had been paralytic for the last two days while Ezhumalai had jaundice for the last six months. “If their kin suspect they died after consuming spurious liquor, they should have allowed us to send the bodies for post-mortem examination,” he said.
