Four held for smuggling gold from SL and Gulf

Late on Monday, the officers intercepted Mohamed Yasarapath (25) and Jaheer Husain (34) from Ramanathapuram, who had arrived from Colombo on Indigo Airlines flight at exit of arrival hall. They were found carrying in their rectum 340 gram gold of 24k purity, valued at Rs 11.10 lakh.

On Tuesday morning, Basha Mohiddin (35) of Kadapa, who arrived from Abu Dhabi by Ethihad flight, was nabbed near the exit. The AIU officers found him carrying assorted gold pieces kept concealed inside the hollow pipe of a juice maker that was in his checked-in baggage. The gold weighed 175 gram was of 95 per cent purity, valued at Rs 5.42 lakh.

In another case on Tuesday, Sathakathulla (46) from Ramanathapuram who reached here from Sharjah by Air India flight was found carrying 443 gram gold of 24k purity in his rectum. It is estimated to be worth Rs 14.5 lakh. In this case, the passenger was arrested as he had previously been held for smuggling foreign currency worth Rs 10 lakh, the statement from Customs added.
