Sans median, 3.2 km stretch in Ambattur IE turns danger zone

The Second Cross Street in Ambattur Industrial Estate, which runs parallel to the elevated Chennai bypass stretch, is badly in need of a median to ensure safety, demand motorists. In the absence of a median to separate the traffic on this 3.2 km long stretch, many motorists do not maintain lane discipline and swerve left and right, which poses danger to other road users including pedestrians.

A Lakshmi, who works in a private company in the industrial estate, said there was a median which was removed when the road was re-laid couple of months ago. Even months after the road relaying, medians were not built. Now, vehicles vie with each other, posing dangers to other motorists,” noted Lakshmi, urging authorities to construct median at the earliest.

She added that steps should be taken to deploy police personnel near the intersection to ensure the motorists from going in the wrong direction.

The road is relatively empty except during peak hours, which is encouraging many a driver to throw caution to the winds and travel at breakneck speeds, added S Shanmugham, a motorist. “Medians prevent motorists from jumping lanes, and help regulate traffic properly,” he pointed out.

Explaining the dangers faced by pedestrians taking this road, John Joseph, an employee of a private firm, said that he would get down at the Ambattur telephone exchange bus stop and walks to his office in an IT park on the road. “Thousands of persons working in the industrial estate use the Second Cross Street to reach their offices. But because there is no median, motorists are making sudden turns endangering the lives of others,” he said.

A traffic police official said that the medians were removed to facilitate the road relaying works. “We have written to the Highways Department to construct median in the stretch to ensure safety of the motorists and pedestrians,” the officer said.
