Plan your weekend: Drive to Nellore for its immersive past
Just about 180km northward from Chennai is Nellore, a district known for its rich past, historic temples, beaches and most importantly, hailed across Andhra Pradesh for its delicious coastal food. Located along the south-eastern coast of Bay of Bengal, the district’s history goes way back to 3rd century BC, and has existed right from the period of Cholas, and then during Ashoka’s rule.

The region also saw the rule of Pallavas, Pandyas, Mauryas, Satavahanas, Kakatiyas, the rulers of Kalinga and Vijayanagara empires, Arcot Nawabs and other dynasties.
The district headquarters, Nellore, stands as one of the most populous cities in Andhra Pradesh. A drive down to the city from Chennai allows one to be amidst the lush green paddy fields, while also not missing out an urban setup including shopping malls and high-end restaurants. It, therefore, offers a perfect mix of rural and urban experiences. Begin your trip to the place with a visit to Mypad Beach, which features soft sands and a picturesque coastline.
This district is sure to pique the interest of all photography enthusiasts, with its Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary, one of the popular tourist spots. Home to hundreds of bird species, this sanctuary also attracts several migratory birds from different continents. Get as close to nature as possible at this sanctuary, which is also a key breeding site for spot-billed pelicans, to observe birds to your heart’s content.
Some of the temples built by the region’s erstwhile rulers, including the Ranganatha Swamy Temple, built in the 7th century by Pallavas, are sure to take you back to the magnificent past. With a 29-metre tall entrance, the temple also has stunning sculpture on its walls.
The district’s Venkatagiri Fort is another historic structure, built in 1775 by the Recherla rulers. A visit to the fort serves as a window to the power structures in past societies. The area is also famous for cotton sarees, with fine weaving.
This is a region that played an important role in the evolution of Telugu language and formation of Andhra Pradesh, which was achieved by Potti Sriramulu from Nellore, who fasted until death for the state. The place is also a favourite for all Telugu-speaking population across the world for its delicious food. Love fish? Nothing can beat a humble Nellore fish curry. Lots of local eateries offer freshest of seafood, in sour and spicy, yet delicious preparations.
