Police also said that they would give suitable reward to persons who provide information on the suspect, who was seen riding a motorbike in the CCTV grab.

It may be recalled that Amethyst owner Kiran Rao and her friend Ranvir Shah were booked by the idol wing unit for suspected links with idol smugglers last year

While the registration number of the two-wheeler was found to be fake, the police sought the help of the media and the public to trace the person, who is believed to be the main suspect in the case. People can contact – 044- 27238070, 044-27237720, 9840980338, 9443349887 to provide any information about him.

Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police Santosh Hadimani said the man on the CCTV footage might have masterminded the heist. The exact value of the gold is yet to be ascertained and would be known only after going through the list ofstolen valuables.

On Sunday evening, Amethyst manager Dayanidhi and three other employees were returning to Chennai with the gold and cash after attending an exhibition in Madurai.

When their car was near Chengalpattu toll plaza, two men in uniform and five others in plainclothes intercepted the vehicle. They claimed that they were from the Idol Wing and wanted to check the vehicle.

The gang then transferred the valuables to their vehicle and told Dayanidhi that they are taking it to Amethyst cafe and asked him to follow them. When Dayanidhi reached his office, he was shocked to find that the ‘police team’ had not reached there.

After consulting his management, he went to the office of idol wing in Guindy, where he was told none of the wing’s sleuths were involved in the ‘seizure’. Dayanidhi then realised that had been conned, and on Sunday night, he lodged a complaint with the Kancheepuram police.
