    Joint sub-registrar, 7 others booked for graft

    Nearly six months after the DVAC team raided the joint sub-registrar office in Chengalpattu in neighbouring Kancheepuram district, the agency has registered a case against the joint sub-registrar, A Senthurpandian, and seven others in connection with the seizure of Rs 2.98 lakh unaccounted cash.

    The other suspects listed in the FIR are Kannadasan and Suryaprakash, both document writers, touts – Murugan, Balaji and Munusamy and two private persons, identified as Srinivasan and Ashok Kumar. The DVAC sleuths seized cash from the private persons who were found in the office. While Rs 1 lakh was seized from Srinivasan, Rs 88,500 was seized from Ashok Kumar. Both of them could not explain the reason for the possession of the cash.


    The raids, which were carried out on October 31, went on till the next day morning. It was conducted after officers received information that officials at the sub-registrar office were demanding illegal gratification from the public, who came for registration of their documents, encumbrance certificates and others.


    The raid team had also seized large amount of cash from touts while Rs 27,730 was found in the file rack inside the record room, the FIR noted.


    The sleuths had also searched the car used by the sub-registrar and found documents of various deeds. The DVAC has registered cases under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and also under the section 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant) of the IPC.
