30 waterbodies to be restored in Chennai
The Greater Chennai Corporation has prepared detailed project reports (DPR) for 30 more water bodies to restore them under Smart City Mission.

As per the DPR, the water bodies, including temple ponds, would be restored at a cost of Rs 9.86 crore. “The DPRs have been placed before the smart city board and tenders will be floated after the board approves the reports,” an official said.
Under the restoration project, the civic body would desilt the water bodies apart from providing groundwater recharge structures, aquatic floating wetland system, inlet canals to drain storm water into the water bodies, filtering arrangements, walkway, children play equipment and others.
The civic body has proposed to set up as many as 210 water bodies in the city, of which 43 water bodies would be handed over to NGOs for restoration. The civic body is restoring 167 water bodies under the smart city.
According to a Chennai Corporation official, restoration works have been completed at 43 water bodies. Tenders were floated for 11 water bodies.
