After 1-year delay, 4 blocks at RGGGH to be opened by June
The four new blocks at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) that were to be inaugurated last year have not been completed yet.
Chennai
The hospital authorities said that the four blocks for various departments, including Urology, Nephrology, Traumatology, Hepatology, and a separate outpatient block, are awaiting the approval from the state health department and will be operational by this year-end.
The construction of these blocks commenced earlier in 2017. Urology, Nephrology, Traumatology and Hepatology departments were to start functioning by the end of 2017, while the outpatients block was to be completed by February 2018. However, even after two years since the work started for the new blocks, the construction is yet to be completed.
With a large number of trauma patients being rushed to the RGGGH, a separate dedicated ward for trauma patients was planned. The current emergency room for trauma patients was revamped after the implementation of the Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency Care Initiative (TAEI) protocol. However, a separate block to provide in-patient treatment for trauma patients is being constructed.
The nephrology department has received 16 new dialysis machines that will be commissioned and installed at the new block, while 33 dialysis machines are functional currently in the old block, said hospital authorities. The new hepatology block will be focused on separate transplant unit at the hospital.
The space currently used by these departments will be used for the expansion of the other departments. Instead of separate outpatients unit for all departments, a dedicated block will be used only for outpatient services.
“The inauguration of the blocks is awaiting the completion of elections in the State. The three blocks for Urology, Traumatology, Nephrology and Hepatology departments are almost complete and will be functional by June this year. The out-patient block will also be completed by the end of this year,” said Dr R Jayanthi, Dean, RGGGH.
