Newly-weds set example as they walk to booth after tying the knot

Even as around 30 per cent of the voters in the city opted not to cast their democratic duty, a few newly-wedded couples highlighted the importance of exercising one’s electoral rights as they visited the polling booths to cast their vote soon after tying the knot.

One couple here in the city– K Siva (25) and Y Yuvarani (24)- were in love even before the wedding and when the parents fixed the wedding date on April 18, they decided not to miss their opportunity to vote. Siva and Yuvarani, both residents of TNSCB apartments in Mylapore, voted at a polling booth in the same area.

“Voting on polling day is a memorable event and we did not want to miss it. We know our act will create awareness among other voters and encourage them to vote. We had our opportunity to make our statement.

We went straight to the booth from the temple, where we tied the knot,” Siva said. He added that 100 percent voting is the only way to ensure a good government coming into existence. “Not only our family and friends, but many voters in the polling booth and polling officials blessed us for our act,” he added.

Meanwhile, another newlywed couple from Kancheepuram headed straight to the polling booth from the temple for casting their vote in Sevilimedu.

Rajendran from Vengadavaram in Sevilimedu and Tamilselvi hailing from the same locality got married on Thursday morning at a temple in Kancheepuram. Soon after the wedding ceremony got over, the couple decided to go straight to the polling station to cast their vote. However, their parents and other relatives refused.

After convincing their kin, the couple reached the government middle school in Sevilimedu with the help of friends and cast their vote together. The couple was given priority as they were called in to vote with waiting in the queue.

Similarly, another newly-married couple from Vellur village near Kannamangalam in Tiruvannamalai district came to the polling station in their marriage attire on their two wheeler to exercise their franchise.
