Summer can be a tough time for furry pets, and even harder for caregivers who have to groom them. Brush before bath

Always brush your pet’s hair before bathing because it helps clear out tangles, matted fur and extra loose hairs. Depending upon the breed brushing every day lets the hair regenerate, shines the coat and improves blood circulation. First, brush in the opposite direction and then comb normally.

    Oil for paw protection

Apply pure coconut oil or butter on dry, scaly noses and paw pads to soothe and repair the cracks. To heal internally and for a shiny coat, add fish oil or flaxseed oil, which is rich in essential fatty acids your dog needs, to the food after consulting with a doctor.

    Taste the paste

At first, let your dog lick the toothpaste off your finger. Once they get used to your finger in their mouth and rubbing the toothpaste over the teeth, graduate to a finger toothbrush — a cap for your finger with bristles on one side. Never use toothpaste made for humans.

    Groom after walk

If your dog is feisty or simply hates baths, grooming might be quite a task. Bathe/brush your pet after a walk or play session. They’ll be tired and less likely to fight with you while you groom, but ensure not to exert the pet beyond a point especially in summer.

    Cornflour for tangles

Cornflour from your kitchen can not only be used in cooking but on your pet too. Sprinkle it in small quantities on matted fur and tangles before brushing to help loosen knots. It can be sprinkled on white patches or markings too — brush the area properly to remove any dirt and bring the shine back.
