Artist couple look for ‘honest politicians’ through street art campaign

With just a week away from going to the polling booth, most voters in the state have already decided on whom they are going to vote for. Interestingly, Hyderabad-based artist couple Swathi and Vijay have come up with an art campaign seeking transparency in politics.

The duo is travelling across the country after completing the campaign in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and is currently stationed at Bengaluru. Their next stop is Chennai.

“Art is one of the best mediums to convey/express our opinion. Once the Lok Sabha election dates were announced, Swathi and I decided to do a campaign. We came up with a stenciled work that reads: Missing,

Honest Politicians. Note: Persons having no information concerning this are requested to think of NOTA and report at your polling booth on 11th April 2019. #findhonestpoliticians. (Voting date in Andhra Pradesh is on April 11). We have set up a couple of these works at various locations in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana,” says Vijay.

Their message is universal — if you strongly feel that the politician standing from your constituency is incapable or dishonest, then think of NOTA as an option rather than not voting at all.

“We are planning to travel to various parts of the country and convey this message. We will be meeting youngsters and educate them about the importance of voting in a democracy.

Most of the youngsters in the country aren’t concerned about the election process,” he adds.

The artists neither have any political agenda nor the desire to support any parties. “We strongly believe there are honest politicians out there. But it’s up to the voter to figure out the truth behind each party manifesto.

Our idea must sound idealistic but this is the only way to elect the right person. If you are unable to find an honest politician then think of NOTA rather than being influenced by external forces,” urges the artist. It’s high time people mastered the art of saying no and the duo opines the same.

“If we aren’t satisfied with a politician’s work we shouldn’t support him no matter what. This generation needs change and clarity and is not interested in candidates who have a political

    lineage,” Vijay tells DTNext.
