In 2015, Dinesh (name changed) had posted on a matrimonial site that he was looking for a suitable bride. A few days later, a person under the name of Harini called him over the phone and expressed interest to marry him as ‘she’ liked his profile.
Dinesh, who was excited, started conversing with her. A few days later, the girl told him that her aunt had fallen ill and was in need of money for her hospital expenses. Believing her, Dinesh deposited Rs 45,000 in her bank account. A few days later, he deposited another Rs 12,000 to buy medicines as she had requested again the money.
However, to Dinesh’s disappointment, the girl was not reachable over the phone and he could not get in touch with her.
Though Dinesh realised that he was cheated, he did not lodge any complaint with the police. Meanwhile, he was married to another woman a few months later.
Four years later, to Dinesh’ surprise, the girl called him again on Monday, spoke to him normally and ended the conversation with a request for a refrigerator. Dinesh, who decided to meet her in person, asked her to come to Vadapalani on Monday evening.
While waiting for the girl, Dinesh saw a man in the vicinity and he dialled the girl’s phone number on suspicion. As expected, the man picked up Dinesh’s call. Dinesh nabbed him and handed him over to the Vadapalani police.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that he used a voice modulation mobile application to speak to Dinesh in a woman’s voice. He also agreed to return the money. Since Dinesh volunteered to withdraw his complaint on receipt of the money, police let off the accused.
