Woman cop loses Rs10K as hubby shares OTP with conman
While the city police have been conducting awareness events to prevent people from falling prey to bank-related frauds, a woman head constable lost Rs 10,000 after her husband shared one-time password (OTP) with a fraudster over the phone.
Chennai
The police said that husband of Muthu Krishnaveni, a head constable at the Villivakkam police station, received a call on Friday and the person on the other end introduced himself as a bank’s customer care officer.
“He sought Muthu Krishnaveni’s debit card and bank account details claiming that her bank account needed to be upgraded for a new scheme. Believing him, he shared the details as well as the OTP received on her mobile phone as her phone was with him.
On Saturday night, the head constable received an SMS informing withdrawal of Rs 10,000 from her account via net banking. When she called her husband to find whether he made the transaction, he told her about the previous day’s phone call. She immediately informed the bank and blocked her debit card to prevent further withdrawal. “Since she had maintained a low balance in the account, the fraudster managed to transfer only Rs 10,000,” the police said.
A complaint has been registered and will be forwarded to Cyber Crime, the police added.
