Hunt on for FB friend who cheated school girl of 50 sovereigns
City police have launched a hunt for the conman who cheated a school girl of 50 sovereigns of gold after befriending her on Facebook.
Chennai
According to police, the girl added him as her friend on Facebook a few months ago. At that time, he had introduced himself as Umar Farook. After chatting with him online for a while, the girl met Farook first at Parry’s Corner where he explained to her the ambitious business plan that he was working on.
After gaining her trust, Farook told her how his business plans did not take off as his friend who was supposed to invest in his venture backed off. Playing it smart, he did not ask her for money; instead, he waited till she herself volunteered to offer her gold jewellery, said police.
In her complaint, the girl said Farook even refused to accept the jewels initially and later accepted reluctantly on the promise of returning double the jewels after his business flourished.
However, since then he started to ignore her calls.
When he spoke to her, Farook did not talk about the business. Only after he began avoiding her totally did the girl realise that she has been cheated.
After she informed her parents about it, and told them that she lost 50 sovereigns of gold to Farook, they lodged a formal complaint.
Police have registered a case and launched a hunt for the suspect with the help of the cybercrime wing police. Further investigation is on.
