He, however, later escaped with two sovereigns of gold ornaments belonging to Saroja, 70, a resident of Dharma Thottam near Irumbuliyur in Tambaram.
The victim was returning from the bank after enquiring about a loan on Monday, when the auto rickshaw driver intercepted her, and promised to arrange old age pension for her through an official known to him at the revenue office in Tambaram.
Saroja went with the auto rickshaw driver, who asked her to get a photograph from a studio nearby.
Later, when Saroja was about to enter the revenue office, the accused asked her to remove her gold ornaments, because the application could be rejected if the official noticed her jewellery.
When she came out of the office, she found him missing. He was also missing from the studio, and so was her gold. She has registered a complaint with Tambaram police.
