PWD directed to study Marina shoreline erosion in detail
The Madras High Court on taking notice of the rapid erosion of the shoreline alongside the loop road, has suo motu impleaded the Public Works Department (PWD) and Union Ministry of Environment and Forest in a case related to hawkers on the Marina beach.

Noting that the distance between the sea and shore is gradually reducing due to erosion, a division bench comprising Justice S Manikumar and Justice Subramonium Prasad before whom the plea moved by Fishermen Care came up on Monday directed PWD to file a detailed affidavit about the functioning of its 'Anti Sea Erosion Wing' along with rules, regulations and orders issued from time to time to prevent erosion and the action taken in the matter of shoreline erosion.
The bench also directed PWD, secretary, to make necessary arrangements for a detailed study of shoreline erosion and Protection Management Plan for Marina beach by the Department of Ocean Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and submit a report, along with the affidavit on March 28.
As regards the hawkers in Marina beach, the bench also allowed an impleading petition moved by Gandhi Silai Kadarparappu Paguthi Nadaipathai Viyabarigal Nala Sangam.
The sangam had submitted that there are approximately 176 members but the high court while issuing notice to Marina hawkers and vendors in a bid to regulate the license process had not included them as a party in the writ petition.
