According to the officials, the civic body is planning to draw water from the borewells located at Moovarasanpet, Nanmangalam and Sembakkam. “In the coming days, we would also pump water from an abandoned ‘Kutcheri’ quarry located in Pallavaram. They would be supplied after purifying it. Over time, we would increase the number of tankers to augment the water situation here. We are giving utmost priority to address the crisis in the next two months,” said a senior official from the Municipality.
With Palar water and Metrowater, the residents are given less than 30 lakh litres of water against the normal supply of 85 lakh litres per day. According to the officials, the residents usually receive 25 lakh litres of Metrowater and nearly 60 litres of Palar water per day.
Further, 110 hand pumps would be repaired and are expected to be put to public use soon. The civic body has identified 12 public wells, which would be desilted and deepened in a short span of time.
“The current supply is inadequate to meet the demands. But the Municipal Commissioner has promised to take up the issue, regardless of the expenditure. In the future, residents can expect water to be supplied via tankers,” said V Santhanam, President of Federation of Civic and Welfare Associations of Pallavaram Municipality.
A resident said, “We get water only for 12 days in a month. They provide water for little less than two hours. The diameter of the pipeline is relatively less as it was laid several decades before. They have assured us to lay new pipelines to pump water from the source.”
