After several complaints from the public that the police don’t take up incidents of vehicle and mobile phone thefts in a serious manner and also refuse to give a Community Service Register (CSR) receipt, the Greater Chennai police decided to go the e-way for lodging complaints. They opened a window on their CCTNS website to help people lodge a complaint online.
In February, police took the next big step to reach out to the victims and launched DigiCop application that was developed by Thinkinfinity Technology and Consulting Pvt, Ltd. “So far, the application has more than 40,000 downloads and about 2,300 complaints have been received through it,” said Mahesh Kumar Agarwal, Additional Commissioner (South), Greater Chennai Police.
DigiCop support team said that a ticket will be generated after reporting the loss of mobile phone or two-wheeler and the complainants can visit their nearby police station the next day to receive a CSR.
Apart from helping to report the loss and check whether their valuable has been recovered, users can also verify if the second-hand mobile phone they are buying is a stolen one by entering its IMEI number in the application. The application also has features to locate your nearby police station with its contact number and address.
Rajkumar, a private firm employee, said that this app would help victims to lodge a complaint easily without running around police stations to get their complaint registered. “It is a very useful application for the residents of the city,” he said and thanked the city police for introducing such an application. Krishnamoorthy Kannurao, another user of application, said that though the application is satisfactory, many features could be added to it to make it more user-friendly. Mahesh Kumar Agarwal said that they were in the process of including more features to the application.
