While two of them drowned in the sea off the Marina, another person, who is yet to be identified, is suspected to have drowned elsewhere. His body washed ashore on the Marina coast at 7.30 am.

According to the police, I Kannan of Kodungaiyur was a private engineering college student. He visited the Marina with four friends to spend time during the weekend. The gang swam in the sea and decided to leave around 10.30 am. But Kannan continued swimming even after his friends returned ashore. Suddenly, he was sucked in by a giant wave. His friends searched for him only to find his body washed ashore behind the MGR memorial.

In another incident, R Jeyanchandran (50) of Tirumazhisai, an employee of an automobile firm, went to the Marina along with his friend Jayakumar. He also drowned and his body washed ashore around 2.30 pm. All three bodies were sent to Omandurar Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital for autopsy. The police are trying to find the identity of the man whose body washed ashore in the morning. The Anna Square police have registered separate cases and have begun inquiry.

Mylapore district police claimed that the patrol has been intensified and action would be taken against those found swimming in the sea after three school students drowned in the Marina on February 2. However, visitors to the Marina beach alleged that there are very few police personnel to man the beach and all-terrain vehicles are hardly used.

When contacted, the Triplicane Assistant Commissioner KM Shankaran said that additional police force will be deployed at the beach on the weekends and added that he has requested the senior officers to provide them with additional strength.
