Woman stages robbery drama, 3rd eye detects it
Lending credence to the city police’s insistence on bringing Chennai under the CCTV surveillance, a 35-year-old woman who faked a robbery to help her friend was caught red-handed by the ‘third eye’ CCTV camera in KK Nagar. Police have detained the woman who staged the drama to mislead her husband.
Chennai
According to the police, Sumitra (34), wife of Palani, a resident of Kannigapuram in K K Nagar, filed a complaint with K K Nagar police station on Thursday night, claiming that her chain has been snatched.
In her complaint to the police, she claimed that she had gone to her son’s school in K K Nagar to give him lunch and was returning home when the incident happened. As she was walking on Balasubramaniam Salai in Sivalingapuram, two masked men on a bike intercepted her seeking direction to an address. After distracting her, they snatched her seven sovereign gold chain and escaped from the spot, she had alleged.
However, the police who checked the footage from 15 CCTV cameras in the locality could not locateany duo on bike in the neighbourhood at the time mentioned byher in the complaint. Instead, what they found intrigued the police team: a footage showed coming out of a pawnbroker shop.
When confronted with this evidence, she confessed to have pledged her gold chain with the pawnbroker and took Rs 90,000 from him. She told police that one of her friends was in financial crunch and asked her to lend money. She decided to pledge the jewellery and gave the money to her friend, but knew that her husband would not allow her to lend money. Hence, to hide it from her husband, she lodged a police complaint to make her husband believe that it was a genuine case of robbery.
