MTC to act tough against absentees
After receiving an increasing number of complaints that many officials were not found in their seats during duty hours, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation has installed four biometric attendance equipment at its headquarters located at Pallavan Salai.

This would help address the loopholes present in the manual attendance register system that is existing now, said senior officials.
According to an official, the management decided to migrate to biometric system as the number of complaints over the employees’ attendance were rising.
“We received complaints stating that the officials were not at their desk during office hours, affecting the performance of the administration.
In order to put an end to this problem, the authorities decided to introduce the biometric system. It will come into existence from February 21,” the official added.
According to a conductor attached to Tiruvanmiyur deport, it is often difficult to meet the officials at their desk. Given the size of the complex, it is difficult to trace them, too. “Therefore, we end up wasting at least half-a-day at the headquarters,” he said.
Now, the equipment will be placed at the staff section, conference hall, ETM server room and technical section. Currently, the system is under trial for a week, and section heads have received directions on orienting their subordinates about the new system.
Under the new system, the employees should reach office at least by 10.15 am, after which they would be marked as ‘Late Present’ (LP). More than three LPs would lead to deduction of half-a-day salary.
Similarly, more than two evening permissions would be considered leave against the afternoon session, official sources said.
As part of this, the heads have been instructed to send reports about the details about the number of staff members present and not present around 11.15 am every day.
The same information has to be sent to the computer section, where it would be fed into the system.
Also, a separate register has to be mandatorily maintained for the on-duty employees, sources said.
