Police said that Baskar (41), who was a contract employee of the Chennai Corporation, died at the private hospital in New Washermanpet where he was undergoing treatment.
“Baskar, who is an alcoholic, had a damaged pancreas. For the past three days, he complained of severe stomach pain and came to the hospital to take medicines and drips daily,” said the police.
On Friday, he came to the hospital at 7.30 pm. As the doctor was not present at the hospital, the duty nurse allegedly asked him over phone regarding the treatment that should be given to Baskar and followed what the doctor said.
Baskar, who was taking drips, was found unconscious and his body was cold, said sources. He was declared dead by the doctor who later arrived at the hospital at 8.30 pm.
Baskar was also a member of the DMK. His family alleged that he passed away due to wrong treatment by the hospital. Around 40 persons protested on the road outside the hospital and hurled stones at the building damaging its glass panels. The police, who arrived at the spot, pacified the protesters and brought the situation under control.
His body was sent to Stanley Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. The police said the cause of his death can be established after the autopsy is done. The hospital refused to comment on the incident.
