Automatic cameras to nab traffic violators on ECR

Under this, cameras linked to speed measuring radars would capture images of vehicles that cross the prescribed maximum speed on this stretch, where over speeding is rampant and fatal accidents are frequent.

According to the details available, the automatic speed enforcement system (ASES) and advanced traffic management system would be implemented along the 34.4 km stretch from Akkarai to Mahabalipuram on the East Coast Road.

“The proposed stretch of the ECR, which was recently upgraded to a four-lane road running from the Akkarai – Sholinganallur link road intersection to Mahabalipuram, incorporates townships such as Kanathur, Uthandi, Panayur, Muttukadu, Kovalam, Vada Nemmeli, Pattipulam,Devaneri,” the tenderdocument said.

The automatic speed enforcement system would have speed enforcement cameras that can capture images vehicles on both directions at four locations on the scenic road. These cameras would be linked to speed measuring radar for capturing images of every vehicle travelling above the threshold speed.

“The ASES will have automatic video incident detection systems (AVIDS) to automatically detect incidents such as wrong way driving, speeding and accidents to ensure appropriate responses in the project corridor. The captured data will be transferred to central server in exclusive control room through high speed optic fibre,” an official said.

It is learnt that the project is being taken up on the East Coast Road as the ‘demonstration safety corridor’ and aimed at improvingdriver behaviour to reduce accidents and fatalities on the stretch.

The TNRSP has floated tenders inviting firms to supply and install equipment to set up this speed enforcement system. “The total project cost is estimated at Rs 8.17 crore. Once the system is implemented, penalty will be imposed on the violators using the e-challan process,” the official added. The vehicle data would be accessible from VAHAN website, which stores details of vehicles across the country, he added.
