The State government, perhaps for the first such instance in the country, has come up with a solution to tackle traffic congestion in Chennai by implementing a‘ComprehensiveIntegrated Parking Management Project’.
Delivering the budget, Panneerselvam said, “The government will implement the project in the city by creating underground (UG) parking facilities for two and four-wheelers”.
Chennai being the state headquarters, faces a lot of traffic congestion and the menace is increasing every day. Though Chennai City Traffic Police have implemented various restrictions for heavy vehicles, there is no end to the congestion and another factor is frequent road accidents.
The main reason cited for accidents is improper parking on roads as vehicles parked outside shops occupy major share of space on streets. Under the new parking management project, multi-level parking facilities and on-lane smart parking would be created, along with underground parking facilities. More than two lakh four-wheelers and equal number of bikes can be parked in the new facilities, which will be constructed in several places.
Rs 2,000 crore had been allotted for the project and it will be carried out in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Finance Management Company (TNIFMC) will provide the necessary financial support for the project, the Deputy CM said.
