Inundated stretches to get underground drain channels

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed to build underground drain channels on Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam radial road and Tambaram-Mudichur-Sriperumbudur Road at the cost of Rs 24.95 crore to end the woes of motorists.

As the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam radial road inundates even after a short spell of rain due to the improper underground drain network, the motorists have a tough time wading through the stretch. Water stagnation is also frequent in the low-lying area of the Narayanapuram canal, which cuts across the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam radial road at the Keelkattalai signal.

Similarly, areas around Tambaram-Mudichur Road are prone to flooding, especially during the monsoon, as there is no outlet for the floodwater to drain. The surplus water course on Mudichur Road was closed to establish a new layout a few years ago resulted in the problem.

“The vehicle users avoid these stretches during the rainy season. Already this stretch is dotted with several encroachments hindering the flow of traffic. This problem is accentuated during monsoon as it slows down the traffic further. We had a tough time as it would take more than three hours to negotiate this stretch. The proposed drain network should end the misery of users,” said S Deepan, a commuter.

“We are planning to construct a drain network on Tambaram-Mudichur-Sriperumbudur Road of GST Road and Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Road. We are still in the process of preparing a detailed project report. The work will commence soon,” an official attached to the NHAI said.
