1,000 kg banned plastics seized from city hotel
The Chennai district food safety officials have seized 1,000 kg banned plastic items from the outlet of a popular chain of restaurants in Vadapalani, on Wednesday.

“We raided the hotel on Wednesday morning based on a complaint received from a customer,” a food safety department official said. The official added that the hotel management had hoarded nearly 1,000 kg banned plastic items, including plastic cups, plates and plastic bags in their central storeroom in the Vadapalani outlet.
“Even though the raid on Wednesday was followed by a tip-off, we will continue to random conduct raids at hotels to check the usage of banned items. The hotel management had procured a huge quantity of plastic items before the ban came into effect,” the official said.
The Greater Chennai Corporation had seized 1.50 tonnes of banned plastic items from various places in the city. The highest seizure was from Royapuram. As per Corporation data, the officials seized 87.39 tonnes of banned plastic items from January 1 to January 30. Among the 15 Zones, 12.12 tonnes was seized from Thiru Vi Ka Nagar.
