    Road safety clubs: Students to be trained to help accident victims

    The students part of the road safety clubs that was recently launched at government and government-aided schools would be trained in identifying black spots and help road accident victims.

    These clubs will be under the direct supervision of the principals who would act as the School-Level Road Safety Club Programme Officers. Students between classes 6 and 9 are eligible to become members.


    Under this programme, the students will be educated about causes of accidents including black spots and blind spots; drunk and rash driving, and the impact of speed in accidents and fatalities; road signs, traffic signals and markers; and also importance of golden hour, good Samaritans and the role of various government departments.


    A hands-on training will also be imparted to use the first-aid-kit and fireextinguishers.


    A district advisory committee will be set up under the chairmanship of Additional Superintendent of Police (Road Safety), who will be responsible for implementing the programme and preparing anacademic calendar.


    The committee will comprise of the branch manager of State Transport Undertakings, Chief Educational Officer, Emergency Management Executive, Divisional Engineer (Highways), St John’s Ambulance Association, District Red Cross Coordinators and Member Secretary of Regional Transport Office.


    During the academic year, 40 hours will be allocated to undertake various activities, including manning traffic for one hour after school hours, visit to road safety park and road safety awareness competitions.


    These clubs would be allocated funds under the State Road Safety Fund to meet their expense.. At the end of programme, the students will receive certificate.
