No Filter: Spinning foot-Tapping tracks on the turntable in the club
If it’s happening in the city, it’s happening here. From who’s dating who to starry tantrums, get the latest scoop in town.
Chennai
A good disc jockey is the lifeline of a party and a great DJ can shape the nightlife of a city. Tarun Andrew Phillip, or DJ TAP as he is known, is one of the hottest DJs in town. He plays at some of the coolest venues in the country and at music festivals. One thing that happens without fail at each and every venue no matter where he’s present, is that a chorus of girls walk up to him, blushing, and chat him up under the pretext of requesting a song or complimenting his mix.
As someone who calls him Andy and has seen him grow up to be the gentleman he is today, this is quite amusing for me. The magic rule with any club is to get the ladies in through the door — the rest will follow. Needless to say DJ TAP has his planner filled with gigs. I don’t know how the boy finds time for gigs, some of which his plays with his sister Christleda.
Many in the city might know him as a master mixer but he can croon pretty well too. Underneath all that swag and street cred is a boy that never misses out on family time every Sunday even after playing till sunrise. From spending time with his grandparents to posting pictures with them on Instagram, he’s making more hearts melt than he knows while cementing his eligible bachelor status.
However, a little birdie tells me that DJ TAP who has the whole city dancing to his tunes just might be dancing to one girl’s tunes. But he is still going to be playing those killer mixes at the next sundowner so I’ll see you on the dance floor.
Floury goodness now closer to home
The word Tryst means a romantic rendezvous between lovers but for us Chennaiites that means some yummy freshly baked goodies. Bread in all shapes and forms is a staple in our diet and looks deceptively simple to make. I tried my hand at making some and all I got was home made rocks I could use in my garden that looked like bread. So if you want fresh, soft bread or seed crusted baguettes and croissants, Tryst, which introduced gourmet bread to us almost a decade ago, is your place. Samia Sait, a friendly baker who smells of the goodness that might have just made, has for years been greeting all of us with a big smile and a warm hug.
Until recently, we had to travel to ECR to get some of this very quick-selling bread that is usually sold out by the time we brave the traffic. So when we heard that the Nungambakkam and Chamiers Road branch opened last year many of us were celebrating. I’m sure a lot of you are wondering why I am gushing about bread but it’s the weekend so go over there, grab yourselves a loaf and then you can thank me! The Chamiers Road branch just completed its one year anniversary and they have some yummy giveaways.
Samia Sait came back to Chennai almost a decade ago after completing her degree in business administration got nudged into handling Tryst Café by her family and the rest is history. Her approach to food was refreshing — from the perspective of a foodie and a connoisseur of all things yummy. As we caught up over some delicious croissants she tells me that she learnt how to bake and tasted her way through setting up a menu and making all of the different breads. She of course credits her hard working team for keeping pace with her aspirations while preserving the great quality they are known for and her family for all of their support. I think it also has to do with Samia and her passion for what she does. She works tirelessly to ensure we have bread on our tables and she does that through the year. From filling in for employees who have personal emergencies to baking in the kitchen, she is a hands-on boss. It’s no wonder that Tryst is popular with the well-travelled clientele and the foodies in the city.
What makes you happy? The answer is different for all of us but the one factor that we can all agree upon is that happiness is the smell of freshly baked bread. I don’t know about you but my schedule for this weekend is all planned.
