    CBI books retired CPWD official in DA case

    The CBI has registered a case of disproportionate assets against R Sampath, a retired Deputy Director General of Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and his wife for allegedly amassing an income of nearly Rs 1.5 crore illegally in four years from 2012, misusing his position.

    According to an FIR registered by CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch in Chennai, R Sampath (62), who retired as Deputy Director General of CPWD, head-quarters, office of Special Director General (Southern Region), as a public servant intentionally enriched himself illicitly during the period of his office. He was in possession of pecuniary resources or property disproportionate to his known source of income. The CBI has cited his wife S Suguna as a suspect in the case. Both are residents of Tiruvanmiyur. 

    Sampath joined as assistant engineer in 1979 and was posted to division – I, Hyderabad. Thereafter, he was finally promoted as Chief Engineer in December 2012 and posted as Deputy Director General (head-quarters) at the office of Special Director General, CPWD, Rajaji Bhavan. He retired on December 31 2016. 

    CBI has found that Sampath and his wife had assets in the form of lands, buildings and flats beside bank balance. They had 13 pieces of land in TN, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, three buildings 

    in Bengaluru and Hyderabad besides three flats in Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai. 

    His official income during the check period was pegged at Rs 1.92 crore. While the asset at the beginning of the check period was shown as Rs 99.93 lakh, it has increased to Rs 3.82 crore at the end of the check period, according to the CBI. 

    The asset acquired during the period was Rs 2.82 crore. However, his income was Rs 1.92 crore and his expenses were pegged at Rs 58.94 lakh. The CBI has also noted that he could have saved about Rs 1.33 crore but he had acquired Rs 2.82 crore during the check period, indicating that the official had disproportionate assets of Rs 1.49 crore.
