Elderly woman pushed by ‘unstable’ son dies of injuries
A 64-year-old woman died on Friday after she was allegedly attacked by her mentally challenged son near Adambakkam in the southern suburb.
Chennai
The woman was hospitalised for a week and died on Friday without responding to treatment. The deceased was identified as D Thangabai, a resident of Balaganga Street in Adambakkam. She had two children Darwin Manohar (34) and Magizhvini (28).
According to the police, Darwin was mentally challenged and was staying at a home for the differently-abled in Paranipudur village near Manapakkam and Thangabai used to visit him every day. Magizhvini was married.
On December 23, Thangabai had taken Manohar to Adambakkam for celebrating Christmas. Thereafter, on December 28, he had a quarrel with his mother, during which he had pushed her towards the wall. As an impact, Thangabai sustained head injuries and became unconscious. Next day, the neighbours alerted the Adambakkam police station, finding their door locked for a long time. Police broke into the house and found Thangabai lying unconscious and Darwin sitting beside.
When inquired, Manohar told the police that he had pushed Thangabai when she had refused to get him married. He said that she had also called him ‘mental’.
Thangabai was admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital. After gaining consciousness, Thangabai, in her statement to the police, said that Darwin did not push her but it was her who had slipped and fell.
She also asked the police to leave Manohar at the home where he was staying.
However, on Thursday night Thangabai died without responding to treatment. Based on Thangabai’s statement, a case was registered under section 174(a) and the deceased’s post-mortem examination report is awaited.
