    Day 2 of ban: Chennai Corporation collects 10.6 tonnes of plastic

    The Greater Chennai Corporation has collected 10,602 kgs of banned plastic products on the first two days after the plastic ban came into effect in the city.

    According to a Corporation press statement, nearly 1.88 tonnes of banned plastic was seized in 15 zones of Chennai Corporation. “The officials seized nearly 2.25 tonnes and 8.35 tonnes of plastic on January 1 and January 2 respectively,” Commissioner D Karthikeyan said in the statement.


    On January 2, the highest amount of plastic seized was in Valasaravakkam zone, i.e., 2,376 kgs. Kodambakkam and Tondiarpet zones recorded 859kg and 720kg seizure respectively.


    “The Corporation will continue to conduct awareness programmes on plastic ban. Action will be taken against manufacturers, traders and users of 14 types of plastics that have been banned by the state,” the release said.


    The civic body also appealed to the public to hand over plastic items at division offices to ensure effective implementation of the ban.


    Meanwhile, a receipt (with Corporation emblem and official signature) of Rs 1 lakh penalty imposed on a plastic user made rounds on social media on Wednesday. However, officials clarified that the receipt was fake.
