Police said that the deceased, Venkatesan (52), was a house painter who lived with his wife Kannagi (48) and two sons, including the accused Naveen Kumar (19).
On Monday night, Naveen Kumar had left home to celebrate New Year and promised to return before midnight. However, he reached home onlyaround 2 am. His mother questioned him leading to an argument between them.
Hearing this, Venkatesan who was sleeping after consuming alcohol woke up and confronted Naveen Kumar after which he pushed his father.
Venkatesan, who lost balance, hit an iron gate and collapsed with severe injuries. “Kannagi and Naveen rushed Venkatesan to a private hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival,”said police.
However, Kannagi lied to police that Venkatesan slipped and fell under the influence of alcohol to save her son. Later, she confessed that her son had pushed Venkatesan down after which he suffered injuries and died. Venkatesan’s body was taken to Arni in Tiruvannamalai district for funeral after the autopsy.
The Nolambur police registered a case against Naveen Kumar, a first-year ITI student, on charges of murder. He was arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
