The Medavakkam village panchayat has around 50,000 residents, who are expected to benefit if the hall were opened.

Locals claimed that the village panchayat had constructed the two-storey community hall on Madaivali Street in the sixth ward. According to them, both the floors had spacious halls that could be used for conducting public functions.

“It was constructed using good quality materials, while modern equipment has been installed. At the time of construction, we were very happy and expected to rent the facility at a cheap price for conducting family functions besides holding community events,” said Nandha Kumar, a resident of Medavakkam Vel Nagar.

“Now, since it remains closed for over three years, anti-social elements enter the building at night and consume liquor, besides indulging in other such activities,” he said, adding that locals are forced to rent private community halls at high costs since the hall remained closed.

The residents have demanded that the community hall be opened soon for their use, stating that more delay will only damage the building.

When contacted, M S Babu secretary, Medavakkam village panchayat, said that while the building work was complete, they were yet to build restrooms.

“We have planned to build four restrooms in the hall and are waiting for allotment of funds for the same. The construction will be fully over as soon as we get the toilets ready, following which the community hall will be opened for public use,” Babu said.
