HIV case: Minor lapses pose big risk, says official

When asked if there was a lapse on the part of the hospital for not checking the authenticity of the HIV test done in February when Parvathy was brought to the hospital in May, Dr Vasanthamani said, “She was rushed to the emergency ward in a serious condition. Thus, doctors failed to notice the lack of ICTC registered number in the HIV report.”

After the complaint, hospital authorities claimed that a detailed inquiry revealed that the woman could not have got the virus through blood transfusion as the donor’s records were verified to be clean.

Commenting on the development, a senior health official said that it was possible that the test done at a private institute could have been during the window period when it is difficult to detect the virus in blood. “However, there is a minor lapse as dealing with a HIV positive person increases risk for hospital staff as well. They should have checked if the test was conclusive or retested,” he said.
