Six years after fire, Humayun Mahal restoration to commence by February

The renovation of Humayun Mahal, a heritage building, would be undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs 31.45 crore, said a PWD official, adding that the tender for the work has already been issued. The works are expected to commence in February, he said, adding that the structure has to be rebuilt from scratch if the old glory is to be brought back.

Officials said they were awaiting the government order for more than a year. “We received it only last week. This will be the first building to be renovated after the formation of the Building Center and Conservation Wing.”

“We are in the process of procuring materials from various places. The work order will be issued in a month. The PWD (Buildings) will obtain special materials, including the limestone from Kalugumalai, Kovilpatti and Rajapalayam. The Madras terrace roofing will be laid using Athangudi titles and teakwood to give a royal look,” said an official.
