    ITI to soon get high-tech labs, new machinery

    In a boost to improve practical knowledge among aspiring engineers, State’s Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) which imparts vocational training to the polytechnic students, will soon be equipped with high-tech laboratories. In addition, the government has also decided to import new kinds of machinery soon.

    There are over 60 government ITIs functioning across Tamil Nadu, including seven ITIs in Chennai, offering various technical courses to the students.


    A senior official from Department of Industrial Training told DT Next that industrial institutes play a vital role in the economy of Tamil Nadu by providing skilled manpower.


    Stating that in ITIs the syllabus focuses on imparting 70% skills and 30% theory, said, it is therefore necessary to update the lab facilities as per the current needs ofthe industries.


    “Though the existing labs provide practical training to the students, the machineries are outdated. Therefore, we will be engaging multinational companies to import latest equipment, “ he added.


    He said Tamil Nadu government has allocated Rs 93.04 crore towards non-recurring expenditure for the purchase of equipment for this academic year.


    According to an official, labs which provide various industrial training to the students will have the latest automotive exhaust gas analyser, computerised wheel alignment machines and radial drilling machines, among others.


    “More than 100 new machinery items will be purchased and despatched in all ITI situated across all districts,” the official said.


    He said apart from purchasing lab equipment, the government will also setup smart board facilities in classrooms of all the institutions with overhead projector.
