    Corporation commissioner, CoP, directed to personally supervise Marina clean-up

    The Madras High Court has directed the Commissioner, Greater Chennai Corporation as well as the police commissioner to put in all their efforts for personally supervising the cleaning and other allied regulatory works at Marina beach.

    A division bench comprising Justice Vineet Kothari and Justice Anita Sumanth, not impressed with the report submitted by the Corporation Commissioner in person about the number of staff deployed to clean up Marina beach, said, “The personal visit of both corporation commissioner as well as police commissioner is necessary so that more vigorous efforts are made by all concerned working under them with the cooperation of visitors to ensure that a tangible change is seen in clearing up of the Marina beach and other nearby areas including Loop Road.”


    The bench while granting two weeks as sought by the Commissioner to undertake necessary consultation process in this regard, also sought for a compilation of court orders passed earlier, regarding the said area for street vending as well as for maintenance by the coordinate benches or single judges of this court.


    Also, seeking to place before them the applicable rules and regulations and terms and conditions presently in force or those in draft form and under active consideration of the state to the hawkers carrying on business in Marina beach, the bench directed the State to place on record the requisite details of the funds allocated by the State and Corporation for maintenance of the Marina beach.


    It also sought details of the infrastructure to be created in future, the designs, plans including the allocation of funds for Marina beach.


    Earlier, the bench on recording the names of seven associations involved in hawking and food stall business at Marina beach, directed the registry to issue notices to the aforesaid associations and direct them to file affidavits to the effect that they are willing and ready to cooperate in the matter of keeping Marina beach and nearby areas of coastal line like Loop Road in a clean and proper shape.
