The arrest of the network came just four months after a techie was arrested in Tiruvanmiyur for procuring drugs such as 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) from the dark web and distributing them among college students.

The network was blown after the police received a confidential information that hard drugs were being supplied to youngsters at pubs. As the tip-off suggested that the drugs were being supplied from Porur, SRMC police led by inspector Shankara Narayanan investigated the matter and secured K Kumaresan (26) and C Diwakar (33) of Maduravoyal. They were in possession of 18 grams of cocaine, 8 grams of MDMA and 10 grams of black meth.

During interrogation, they informed the police that they had received the drugs from a Nigerian from Bengaluru.

Following this, Ambattur Deputy Commissioner I Easwaran and team devised a plan to trap the Nigerian. They placed an order for more drugs through Kumaresan. On Sunday evening, when the Nigerian came near an apartment off Perungalathur-Maduravoyal bypass road to handover the drugs to Kumaresan, the police team surrounded them and arrested the Nigerian.

They found 512 ecstasy tablets, a laptop, four mobile phones, a weighing machine and Rs 42,000 in cash in his possession.

During preliminary investigation, the police team identified him as C Chukwu Simon Obinna (30) from Abuja in Nigeria. Sources said he was based in Bengaluru after coming to India on an employment visa. According to investigating officers, Obinna’s modus operandi to expand his business was to supply drugs to tourists in Goa before luring them to enter the business as his agents. “That is how Kumaresan and Diwakar became part of the network,” said police.

Though Obinna claimed that he procured the drugs from another person, police are investigating whether it was imported from other countries or they are manufactured in India itself.

Among the drugs that was seized from the trio, cocaine is the strongest narcotic substance. However, police said, ecstasy tablets were in huge demand among drug users in city. It is often alleged to be used to spike women’s drinks. The trio were remanded to judicial custody under Section 8 (C) read with 22(C) NDPS Act. However, Obinna has sought for his deportation to Nigeria.
