Ten years ago, Jayashree had given birth to her first child weighing 3.2 kg. But this time she conceived through ovulation induction.
“Usually, if the estimated weight is more than 4.5 kg, we recommend a Caesarean section. In this case, we estimated the baby to weigh around 4.2 kg. As the mother did not have Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), fetal macrosomia up to 5kg was not anticipated,” said director of the hospital Dr Vijaya.
She added that the baby was delivered normally and handed over to the paediatrician.
“The mother had no complications following delivery. The baby was under observation in the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit. This is the first time we have delivered a baby of this weight without C-section. The maximum weight of the baby born through normal delivery in the history of this hospital is 4.8 kg,” Dr Vijaya said.
She added that the chance of a baby being born with more than four kg is less than two per cent.
While the normal weight of a child is 3 kg at the time of birth, there are instances where diabetic mothers give birth to large babies. There have been instances of babies being weighing around 4.9 kg being born in Tamil Nadu.
“However, this mother had no such disease. We, however, urge parents of such babies to monitor them for obesity at the latter part of their childhood,” Dr Vijaya added.
