Thanks to phones, order for calendars dwindles

A few years ago, Sheeja Prasad, a housewife from Valsaravakkam, used to religiously jot down events, payment dues, grocery lists, and her yoga class reminders on the calendar in her kitchen.

She would wake up to her calendar every morning, and it would spur her on her daily routine, all while dutifully hanging on the wall.

Now, however, only a rectangular patch of the clean wall remains where her calendar once was. “With apps to order groceries from, and another app to keep track of my exercise routine, I don’t need it anymore,” said Sheeja.

With the rapid rise in technology and use of social media, people don’t rely that much calendars anymore,  said Kiran Kumar, owner of MR Offset Printers, a calendar printing shop on Bunder Street, Parry’s Corner, which has been in the business for 25 years.

“Although the big companies and brands still place bulk orders for calendars at the end of every year, the number of calendars they place orders for has been decreasing gradually,” he said.

Gopinath, a worker at Balajee Offset Calendars, which has been delivering mammoth orders for over 40 years, from its base at Bunder Street, said, “Every year, the number of calendars in bulk orders drop by at least 1/5 of what it was the previous year. As a result, the number has reduced drastically over the years.”

Gopinath said, “We retain our regular customers every year, none of the companies have cancelled their orders. However, the quantity dropping each year is a worry in the long scheme of things. Even this year’s orders have dropped by a bigger margin since last year.”
